What is Drop-shipping?

Essentially, drop-shipping is a way in which a retail business (mostly online) operates, where the actual products it sells are not locked away in an in-store warehouse or in a storage unit somewhere across the country.

Instead, when a store sells a product using the drop-shipping model, it purchases the item from a third-party like Printful and it’s fulfillment centers and then ships it directly to the customer. As a result, you the seller have no need to handle the product directly.

There is no need for a warehouse, storefront, or any other brick and mortar location. It’s as easy as, sourcing your product from a manufacturer, setting up a digital store, and selling that product directly to customers all around the world. It is an extremely empowering type of business model, as a single person located anywhere around the world can start a full brand all by themselves.

Drop-shipping isn’t a new digital business opportunity, yet the drop-shipping world has experienced some real changes in the past several months. Because of Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, many of us have been doing more of our shopping from home, which seems quite natural considering the sudden need for social distancing and health precautions we must now adhere to.

According to 2020 e-commerce data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, consumers spent $146.5 billion on e-commerce, just in the first quarter of 2020, a 14.5% increase from the numbers we saw last year, and that’s just within a period of only two weeks of Covid-19’s full effect on U.S. retail.

All this makes us wonder, if these numbers are already at record highs only a couple of weeks into the pandemic, what lies ahead for drop-shipping businesses and the subsequent small businesses that rely on this sales model?

Personally I can only see success in the horizon for anyone that starts their drop-shipping business today and with Printful’s ever growing gallery of merchandise, not only can you sell t-shirts but you can also sell mugs, hats, clocks, bags and all sort of items.

Some extra tips for starting your drop-shipping business and making your first sale:

1- Promote it everywhere: start by telling your friends and family on facebook and instagram, then move-on to less personal social media platforms like Twitter, Discord and Tumblr. This will go along way in securing your first sales, and creating traction for your online store.

2- Pick your images carefully: In most cases I’d rather go with the lifestyle mock-up than the standard human mock-up that Printful’s amazing mockup generator tool offers. Whilst both are shot in very high resolution and their quality are outstanding. I find that unless you are shooting the product on one of your actual clients, the human mockup will cheapen your page if all the products show the same person, in the same pose, wearing a different shirt. The lifestyle mockup will be much better in this regard and can look great even if repeated throughout the whole site.

3- Take the time to blog about your design: People buy into ideas, brands and concepts that represent them. This is why when you are trying to start a drop-shipping business you need to take the time to tell your audience the why behind your work. Tell them the tools you use to create your designs, why you create them and even how you create them. All of this information will go a step further towards bettering the connection between your potential buyers and their soon to be favorite design.

Apply these 3 tips and soon you will be well on your way to a successful t-shirt and merchandising drop-shipping online business with Printful.
